Ted May is a brilliant humor/adventure cartoonist who works primarily in minicomics. He is part of the minicomics clique in St. Louis that also includes Kevin Huizenga and Dan Zettwoch (two of my other favorite artists).

Besides “It Lives #1″, he has made a number of obscure anthology appearances, a free “preview” of “It Lives #2″ and this thing. It’s like he doesn’t want to retire a millionare at age 35!

It Lives #1.

Self-pub, Fall 2002. Available from USSCatastrophe. $2, 36pp, xeroxed minicomic, color xerox cover.

Punk rock minicomic! This comic book is energetic, hilarious, powerful, fun, and real! The primary mode is magical realism as only a comic book can do it. A rock band is searching for a new guitarist, and their last applicant is an overly perfumed king of the underwater domain. The last short story, the archaeological superhero story “Monster Mask,” is four years old but may be the best in the book. The art is full and appealing, even though the backgrounds are sparse. Anyway - yes, read this one!
